Just a point of clarification. The feather does NOT always start at the
FAF. There are 2 different terminologys we need to get straight here.

One is the final approach FIX. And the other is the Final Approach SEGMENT.

With a fully functioning ILS, the Final Approach SEGMENT begins at the
feather and on glideslope.

The Final Approach Fix is depicted by the * on the profile of view of the
approach chart.

For instance, look at the 21-6 chart for the 14R ILS into Chicagos OHare
airport. The final approach fix is CHSTR which is 7.5 ILS DME. However, the
Final approach segment begins way back at BIFLE (21.1 ILS DME) IF you are
using the full ILS and on glideslope.

The final approach segment is the segment where you commence your final
CONTINUOUS descent to either DH or MDA.
