I > am looking at the approach plates and notice they have a PAR approach. > Someone had told me once I should try one sometime. On a lark, I tell > Approach I want a practice PAR. They get excited and tell me to stand by. > 30 seconds later they give me a discrete com freq. We do the PAR. Its > cool. On the ground they tell me the controllers dont get to practice them > often, the delay was while they determined who was least current on the PAR, > and the practice was a treat for him as well. > > The only PAR in these parts nowadays is at Redstone Army Airfield (HUA), 5 nm ENE of HSV. I fly out of that field. The controllers still need the practice for currency and will often ask us if we can fly the PAR for them. I believe that pilots not authorized to land at HUA also can fly the approach but may not allow their wheels to touch the runway. If there was a PAR at HSV, it was before my time. When was your experience? Stan Prevost Huntsville, AL |
