My home field (U42) has a GPS approach that, unfortunately, is in-line with
one of the localizer courses for Salt Lake Intl airport. Anyway, I think this is the reason they almost never approve the use of this approach in IMC (either that or the miss takes you in the opposite direction of inbound localizer traffic). Anyway, while ATC generally wont give you the GPS approach, they WILL let you fly the localizer, and if you spot the field under you while inbound, you cancel IFR and land. Doesnt seem very safe to me, but its a pretty common way to get in. The tragic part of all this is a guy based at U42 died this past Spring while trying to scud-run in after being denied the GPS approach. When he was told he couldnt have the GPS approach, he elected to shoot the ILS into Provo (PVU) which is a five minute flight away from U42. He cancelled when he broke out and he turned north to try and scud run home. Instead, he flew into a cloud, and hit the mountains while attempting a 180. |
