Incorporating a GPS display into my IFR scan was difficult at best. I have
flown for years with a KNS 80 King silver crown panel and HSI. We installed a complete Garmin 530/430 panel in our 210 and my instrument flying went down the drain. I finally realized that my scan and my IFR flight protocols were being usurped by the panel display and that I was not flying utilizing my basic scan. I suppose that if I had not been trained so extensively on the old instruments and panel layout I would not have had such a problem. I suspect that the young kids that grow up with this stuff will make out just fine; unfortunately most flight schools do not and will not have advanced GPS panels in their aircraft for some years, and the FAA, in their wisdom will still require NDB approaches be taught instead of GPS. The short answer is, if you are a good IFR pilot and you are now having trouble flying approaches, the problem may be in your scan and not in your knowledge of the equipment. That new display in the center of your panel can be a great attractor(and distracter) at least it was for me. R.Wallace CFIAIM |
