Arguing that GPS needs a backup system, because it can be jammed, is pointless if the "backup system" can in fact be jammed just as easily or more easily than the system "needing backup". Ie., if GPS can be jammed by a ham sandwitch, it is pointless to say that is a problem if all the current alternatives can be jammed by same said ham sandwitch. This, in a nutshell, is what I have a problem with, this retoric based argument that we propose many kinds of attacks on GPS but then decline to discuss the equal or greater ease with which the current systems could be defeated, by similar techniques, including a crowbar from the local Ace hardware store applied to the (terrestrial) transmitter. The argument that a "cripple" would somehow be safer if backed up by another "cripple" is specious. |
