What people commonly call "Instrument Approaches" are more formally called "Standard Instrument Approach Procedures". A procedure turn is a course-reversal turn you execute as part of the procedure. Back in the bad old days when a procedure designer was limited to using fixes which could be formed from ground-based navaids, and dead reckoning segments between fixes, procedure turns were a necessary evil. With GPS, you can put fixes pretty much anywhere thats convenient. You still need to take terrain into account, but at least you you dont have to worry about silly things like navaid service volumes and cross-fix geometries. |
