Hello,

I recently had a radio failure on an a/c (C152) and would like to get
one of the above; the good ones also have VOR reception.

However I heard that some barely work inside the cockpit of a metal
a/c. Incidentally I heard the same said about portable GPS units -
they need an external antenna to work properly.

The VOR reception on handheld transceivers is said to be particularly
bad, with an external antenna almost essential.

The one I have seen is an ICOM one for 300 UK pounds, about US$450.

Any views appreciated.
