Yes, Ive been having a "spirited" discussion about that with some online
acquaintances. The problem with computer programming is that anyone
with a PC and the time and inclination to learn, can become a programmer.
And all over the world, people are doing exactly that. The barriers to entry
in the programming business are low, now that PCs are cheap. People who
can manage projects and teams of programmers are in demand, but
individual coders are out of work in increasing numbers.

What I think will be interesting is the political fallout when big companies
start outsourcing their programming to third-world countries, essentially
importing blocks of pre-written code. Will our government attempt to
impose an import tariff on computer code? It will be fun to watch. . .
