I would fill out a NASA report, but not necessarily because of what
you fear. First though, was that BJC tower you were switched to or DEN tower? Only reason I ask, and this has to do with the NASA idea, is that I was told by a controller there that even though their airspace goes to -80 on the charts, anyone between 75-80 they switch to approach to work. I didnt understand it, and he concurred, no one usually does. Not sure if he meant the half under the Class B or the area west of it, but the Class B floor is 080 anyway. The chart would make anyone logically conclude that BJC owns up to but not including 080 anywhere within 5 miles, and DEN approach owns 080 and above from BJC east. It has something to do with airspace allocation between the two and nothing to do with the Class B or anything on the terminal chart. If you fill out a NASA form, call BJC and verify this, this controller made it sound as everyone at BJC operates this way. As far as what youre worrying about, DEN (NOT BJC!!) can work you through the Class B, theyll let approach know and get approval for it. They still shouldve told you "Cleared into Class B" even if they got the clearance for you through Approach. Total agreement with others here, verify it. From what I remember of my days working at DEN Apch, the tower has its set of codes, if you were going through there on 1200 you wouldve been busted in a big way. If you were on one of the towers codes, and especially if the tower told approach about you, approach (who would be the one to notify you of a violation) would just watch you fly by. Sounds as if the tower obviously knew who you were, and probably approach as well, and if there was any problem they wouldve had you call in. Many of those violations are handled by a phone call and nothing else. For the approach to ship you to tower is nothing odd. Tower, unlike most towers, owns out to 10 miles there. Im assuming you were staying below Class B until the DEN 10NM circle. At that point the tower sort of becomes a tracab, they have you on radar, and approach has to stay out of there, except for operations into BKF, Aurora, and FTG. Does the tower still have to give you the right phraseology, you bet. Do you have to get the clearance? Yep. Are you in any trouble? Highly unlikely. Sounds like everything was done the way that airspace was set up to run, except for one bit of phraseology by the tower controller. PS: going around via Platte Valley or a clearance at the bottom of Class B near Van -Aire sounds simpler. Good luck trying your route when 7/25 are being used.
