Its totally anecdotal at this point, and probably will always be. I have a
Palm VIIx on order and Ill be testing the palm.net service at various
altitudes in the southeast, but Ill need others to report in with coverage
results in specific areas. Just looking at the coverage map I can already see
that at this point, mid-west coverage is spotty, and even California is only
moderately populated with the towers. Palm.net service is supposed to be
expanding but we obviously cant count on that. Thus the need for this entire
project to be done on the cheap, or free.

I think it is, although were kind of bastardizing the weakness (strength?) of
an existing service for our aerial use. Palm.net is not intended for this
application, although theres no reason it cant be used this way. CBAV users
seem satisfied (again, all anecdotal.) Will it work for everyone? Probably
not. I suspect that those of us east of the Missippi would have good results.
Some areas out west will work pretty well too, but there will be big gaps in
the center of the country. I say screw the naysayers, though! Getting true
datalink capability is expensive, more than I (and many others) want to spend,
and if we can get 90% of the functionality for <1% of the cost of the certified
(or portable) systems, I say we go for it.

Of course, this thing might turn out to be a waste of time, and Im not
promising anything... yet. Well see if this thing has wings or not.
