Oh, you'll love this one, Jay. If it's the one I remember, it went like
this:
Pilot/owner of a Super Cub (or was it just a Cub... is a Super Cub also
piloted from the rear seat?) built a home-brew motion picture camera
mount in the front seat, then installed a camera and cameraman. Pilot
got in the rear seat, and attempted to take off from a private strip.
A third party (owner of the strip?) had a dispute with the pilot, and
drove a van onto the runway to prevent the takeoff. Pilot continued,
hit the van, and the cameraman received severe brain injuries when he
hit part of the camera mount. Pilot survived, claimed he couldn't see
the van on the runway.
The cameraman's family filed suit, and naturally the jury found Piper
liable for selling an airplane with poor forward visibility.
No fooling. Happened in the early 90's I believe.
Is this a great country or WHAT?
