Subject:GPS vs. DME

I thought I read somewhere that GPS could be used in place of DME in most
instances. Can anybody confirm this and give me a reference.

The other thing Id like to know is this: What specific equipment is
required in an airplane to do instrument flight training? I would think you
could get away with less equipment after training as long as you had the
equipment for the approaches you wish to do. But, what approaches must be
flown on an instrument checkride, and therefore require that equipment to be
in the training aircraft?
