Actually, the conventional wisdom is lean it brutally for idle. If you forgot to reset it for takeoff, all that will happen is that the engine will not come up to speed when you run full power in. You can lean all you want at low power settings and you wont cause any problems. The problem comes from excessively lean mixtures at high power settings (which pretty much means low density altitudes at near full power in non-turbo aircraft). Back when I used to operate from an airport at 6000 the first thing we did after getting oil pressure is pull the mixture back. During runup, we leaned for best power. |
