Sure, better > surveillance and altimetry could reduce the current 5 miles/2000 feet > minimum separation to, lets say, 3 miles/1000 feet. But if 20 miles in > trail regardless of altitude is still required due to the lack of runway > capacity, what has been accomplished? No argument there. Sure youll be able to move more tin in/out with more runways. Id think, though, that if you add more concrete, youll move the bottleneck to the jetways (assuming of course you dont add more of those along with). And what happens when theres a maintenance "challenge"*** that ends up resulting in a gate departure delay? Correct me if Im wrong, but its the airlines domain or responsibility once that (arriving) plane is off the movement area. ATC is doing their job moving em in/out. Its the airline that doesnt have a gate ready for them. Wrost Id experienced was on arrival, once, when we sat in a plane staring at an empty jetway because of a fuel truck in the way. Next to it were a relaxed group of ground crew. We sat there for a good 15 minutes. Did ANYONE at the airline know this plane was arriving? Regards, Jon *** I split a gut on the subway ride in this morning reading that one :) You know what the "challenge" was?
