Well, Jay, the general idea is that a new drug is made available only by
prescription until enough data is collected about the patients for the
FDA to feel that it is safe. "Safe" simply means that very few people
have dangerous reactions to the drug. Sudafed has done this; Allegra
either has not or the manufacturer has not applied for approval to sell
it over the counter.

That said, your reaction is the opposite of normal for Sudafed. That
stuff is a stimulant for most people. *Unless* you bought the special
formula marketed "for allergies". I made that mistake once. If thats
what you did, buy the regular Sudafed if this happens again. Dont buy
a generic version (the brand Target markets is useless). Take only one
pill. Take a second one an hour later if needed.

The above is based on my experiences with the stuff. I dont have hay
fever, but Im allergic to several plants (including grass), so I know
what its like.
