Cessna claims that the direct operating costs for a Grand Caravan are about
$200/hour, or $1.11/mile. This includes fuel, oil, reserves for overhauls, engine & airframe maintenance, parts, and avionics repairs. Any Caravan drivers know whether these figures are close to the mark? A couple of Cessnas assumptions look low to me: $1.90/gallon for fuel, and a shop rate of $42/hour. Their figures also seem to depend on the engine, prop, and generator all making TBO. Cessna also claims that you can count on 1200 productive hours a year from this plane. This seems to allow almost no down time. Is 1200 hours/year a realistic expectation? They assert that with 1200 hours you can expect a total operating cost of about $400/hour, or $2.43/mile, including crew cost and financing. Are these figures reasonable, allowing for the caveats already mentioned? |
