In a 172 you will have to fly up the Owens Valley. On rare occasions the
air above the Owens is calm and smooth. Most of the time it is fairly turbulent and often it is really turbulent. The Owens and the area around Bishop is home to what is probably the most powerful mountain wave system in the world. Gliders have reached over 49,000. While it is rare for aircraft to be broken up in flight, this is precisely the place where it happens! See the book Exploring the Monster by Robert Whelan...Awesome Book! The only reason I mention all this is that the wave season usually starts in September. Now that we have decided to pick a calm day with the forecast winds at BIH under 30kts at 9000 you should go and enjoy the flight. But be aware that your passengers may get airsick flying up the Owens if there is much wind at all. I would not fly a 172 up the Owens Valley at night and IFR is out of the question since a 172 cant reach the MEA. Pick a Saturday morning and go early. My first solo cross country was from SMO to MMH in a 180hp 172 and I used to go there about twice a month with my dogs to escape LA in my Turbo Lance. Dont be dissuaded from going but do pick the right day. Actually it is more a matter of NOT picking the wrong day!
