Takes quite a bit of "playing." The receiver in a regular transponder wont
work (the "reply" that he wants is on a different frequency from the one
received by the transponder, although the receiver in an older analog unit
could probably be "adjusted" enough).

Once you have the 1090 MHz demodulated bit stream coming out you still have to
pick it up into a shift register or some such, capable of handling the
Megaherts bps data rate and then decode it by fairly precise timing. No big
deal if you dont mind wiring together enough TTL gates, but pushing the limit
for a little processor chip (68HC12 or such).

After that its pretty easy to do whatever you want with the information.
