In a perfect world the GPS III Plus would be able to take the Jepp DB and
hey presto a GPS III Pilot. This just isnt how it works and to the best of
my knowledge theres no (simple) way to make it work, there some firmware or
the like that is needed to get the Jepp stuff in - hence the price
differential. Having said that (and I own a GPS III Pilot) you are probably
better off with the GPS III Plus and save a few bucks. Almost all of the
flight planning software you care to use does not access the Jepp DB for
waypoints airports etc etc. When you upload a route automagically using one
of the myriad of flight planning packages and the even more abundant simple
waypoint/route packages these points are essentially duplicated.

There is one package that allows you to create a route using the Jepp stuff.
Its a bit convoluted, but it does work. If you go the GPS III Plus route
you will miss out on:

The Jepp DB of aviation data including comms freqs for airports (I dont use
these anyway)
Special use airspace (Handy but not essential)
VNAV Profiles (Just started using this feature, again not essential)
An aeroplane icon cursor (so what)
Some E6B stuff (never used it)
A few other aviation do dads....

I previously used an e-map and Id have rather bought an e-Map Pilot if it
existed.

You can download the manuals in PDF format for both the GIII Plus and the
GIII Pilot from the Garmin web site (and any other manuals you might want to
look at).

YMMV,
Kevin
