Subject:The New Telex Stratus 50D Vs Lightspeeds 25XL

Dear Aviators,

I just wanted to mention that I recently tried ANR headsets and will
never go back to passive, the difference is just to undeniable.

A little more that a month ago I purchased a pair of the DC 10-13Xs
and a pair of Lightspeed 25XLs to compare, the Lightspeeds blew the
DCs away – and I was really hoping to prefer the DCs because of the
reputation and (admittedly) the look of them but the Lightspeeds would
always make me say wow when I switched them on, the DCs made me think
"is that it?", so they went back!

NOW, I see adds for the new Telex Stratus 50-Ds and think "could
those actually be better than the already fantastic 25XLs?" … the
answer is "pretty much!" For starters, the 50Ds are impressive before
even switching them on (passive) and thats comparing them to the
25XLs (rated at 22db) and the DC 13-4s (23 db rated).

The 50Ds are rated at 24db passive (but actually seem better) ,
however, once you switch them on, thats when youre really impressed,
they really, noticeably cancel out more than the 25XLs … theyre
AMAZING!! Note that because of the impressive electronics and the
amount of material in these headsets, the Stratus 50Ds are a little
heavier than the average BUT compensated for with great comfort and
super impressive noise attenuation. As always, shop around, I found
mine at $695!

Now, I realize that I may be the only one that would be concerned or
affected by this but the one thing I dont like about the Telex is
their mic element. Though the specs look good on paper, they sound
horrible to me. In other words, my David Clarks and Lightspeeds sound
so much fuller than the Telex, which sound as though everything below
500Hz is cut off. Im certainly not aspiring for "fidelity" on the
air, but I certainly appreciate a good sounding mic on a headset and
the Lightspeeds by comparison are more impressive.

So, Ive decided to keep the one pair of Stratus 50Ds for my wife (or
passengers) and instead of getting a second pair, keeping the
Lightspeed which are still pretty good compared to the others out
there but sound much better than the Telex.

But thats just me …
