Concerning my friends experience with "carb icing" in his 503, on a near
freezing foggy day, Scrappman wrote: > > Sounds more like fuel contamination with water. To close the opening of a > side draft would be tough. Not saying its not possible, just not likely. Could be. However, we never drained any water from the tank after that experience. I have to admit we never considered water contamination (as we should have), plus the stupid trike didnt have a fuel tank sump with a tap, anyway! (Your plane has one, doesnt it?). If water contamination caused the problem on the cool and foggy day, in the absence of removing water from the tank, one might expect the problem to recur on subsequent flights. It never did. Another friend with an R582 GT-500 twice lost all power when he throttled back for landing after small cross-country trips on two different cool foggy days. Both times the engine ran fine after sitting on the ground. As he suspected carb ice, and likes to fly in all conditions, he rigged up a carb heater using a scoop behind the cylinders to funnel "warm" air onto the exterior of the carbs. Looks like Hell, but he hasnt had the same problem since. kk |
