2 die in ultra-light plane collision in Ontario WebPosted Fri Jan 12 19:48:39 2001 MATTAWA, ONT. - Two pilots were killed when their single-seat planes collided in mid-air over a town in northern Ontario on Friday. Wreckage was scattered over several hundred metres. Stan Lamabe, 60, and Richard Lafreniere, 50, died in the crash, which happend around 1 p.m. ET over a riverside park. Both men were from Mattawa, a town of about 2,800 people just east of North Bay. The victims were old friends. Their small aircrafts – an ultra-light and a Supercab – did not carry passengers. No one on the ground appeared to be injured, according to Ontario Provincial Police. Investigators said skies were clear. Theyre still trying to figure out what caused the collision.
