Thanks for your reply, Ive learnt more about BPs in that than I have anywhere else - please continue educating me (and others Im sure). I suppose its the fear of the unknown thats putting me off arming the thing. What is the mechanism that deploys the chute when handle is pulled? I understand that its a rocket therefore there must be some kind of fuze and propellant used. Continuing on this erroneous thought process Im guess that the propellant is powder and not liquid, just how stable is it, does it deteriorate with age? I cringe when interested onlookers walk around and ask, Whats this mate? while slapping the canister! I also accept that if field landings dont set it off and healthy slap wont hurt but it doesnt make me feel any easier. Your further thoughts and experience will be appreciated. It wasnt my intention to denounce their use and re-reading my original I dont think I did. Certainly my sentence construction could have be clearer; how many mid-air structural failures are there in the microlighting world (that arent caused by manoeuvring outside of the aircrafts design envelope) on established designs? Not any Id hope. Personally I fly an old aircraft with a small engine over the only bit of flat ground in an otherwise hostile environment, gently gently is my byword. Others I know are pushing the boundaries of the sport and for that Im grateful, for those people I willingly accept a BP is an added security. My security blanket is a healthy dose of cowardice coupled with a knowledge of my limitations and respect for my aircrafts age; 2G turns, not today thank you. Look forward to your reply John |
